Aluminum Dent Repair: Drawn Arc vs. Capacitor Discharge

Choose the right technology for panel quality, speed, and ROI.

Drawn Arc – Clean, Controlled, Deeper Repairs

What’s the Difference?

Both Drawn Arc and Capacitor Discharge (CD) aluminum dent repair systems work by welding studs or keys onto aluminum panels so they can be pulled back into shape.

The key difference is in how the weld is created. Drawn Arc uses a controlled, gas-shielded arc for a clean, precise weld with minimal heat spread, while Capacitor Discharge delivers an ultra-fast electrical pulse from stored energy.

These different processes affect weld cleanliness, heat input, repair depth, and overall panel impact—making the right choice important for both repair quality and shop efficiency.

Capacitor Discharge (CD) – Quick, Low-Power Setup

  • Fast weld pulse (≈3 ms) from a charged capacitor bank; commonly supports M4–M6 studs, microprocessor-controlled, automatic gun, and “Flexible Voltage” input 85–265 V for easy site power.

  • Benefits: fast cycle time, light power requirements, simple to learn, lower equipment cost.

  • Trade-offs: more invasive to the panel than drawn arc; typically optimized for shallower pulls and cosmetic operations.
